Your question assumes that babies need claining, in fact, babies are often born with a layer of vernix, and yes it looks gross. For years medical staff rushed to wash it off. Now they know that this stuff is like a magical skin cream. Leave it alone it will sink into the baby's skin and provided anti-bacteria protection and wound healings. Don't wash it off. leave it there to do the job.
