10 Bizarre Things That Happen To Your Body While You Sleep

PART ONE

1-    Your Brain Takes Out The Trash

Throughout the entire day, your brain is working. You think, react, worry about something you might have said three years ago in the middle of the night. Such brain activity causes the formation of waste products like toxic proteins and metabolites accumulating in your brain between cells, like some sort of garbage never collected.

Introducing the glymphatic system. While asleep, it works almost ten times harder than when you’re awake. Cerebrospinal fluid literally washes the brain from all its waste products, flowing along its channels. Your brain cleanses itself by means of a pressure wash every single night. This process doesn't work well enough when you’re awake. It can happen only while you sleep. If you deprive yourself of sleep regularly, your brain will gather those toxic proteins inside, eventually leading to Alzheimer's disease. And when you hear that sleeping is for the weak and lazy, just remember, you perform important neurological maintenance on yourself.

2. Your Eyes Go Absolutely Haywire

Have you ever seen a person sleeping, and his eyes moved frantically under the eyelids as if watching an extremely stressful game of tennis? This is REM sleep – rapid eye movement. And no one can answer why this phenomenon occurs.

One hypothesis is that you are moving your eyes in order to follow the images that appear in your dreams, just like you would in real life when observing something. Another hypothesis claims that it occurs due to the brain activity involved in memory consolidation.

The agreement among scientists is that REM sleep is vital for your psychological well-being. Without it, you will become emotional, forgetful, and incapable of concentrating. So while your eyes are up to something during this type of sleep, they are definitely keeping it a secret.
