Communication; key to a successful marriage

It is a common belief that two people cannot walk together except they agree. The agreement between a man and woman creates the institution of marriage which is an honorary one.

This agreement would not come to pass if there is no communication between the two parties involved. Communication is very important in the relationship between a man and a woman and even in relating with other people.

Although, there might be issues or conflicts which tends to create communication barrier between couples, it’s important to know that a lack of communication is the foundation for the failure of many marriages.

This implies that a successful marriage can be built on good communication between partners and can also be destroyed when the communication is severed.

Communication can either be in the verbal or non-verbal form:

Verbal Communication

Verbal form of communication involves expression of thoughts and ideas by words of mouth.

·         It enables couples to look at each other and discuss face-to-face helping them to understand one another.

·         It also helps partners to express their views and thoughts with eye contact leading to confidence and trust between partners.

·         Couples can settle disputes between themselves when they discuss rather than involving a third party.

·         It creates freedom of speech in the home where both partners are free to express their minds and opinions concerning any matter in the presence of their spouse.

Non verbal communication

The use of body language or signs are forms of nonverbal communication which are also important in communicating with one another.

·         It helps to express both agreements and disagreements to any subject matter being discussed.

·         Eye contact shows appreciation and interest on the matter being discussed.

·         Love, honesty and trust can be expressed by nonverbal communication.

Communication is a very important aspect in marriage, it can build or break a home. Therefore, it is crucial for every married couple to take cognizance of the fact that it must not be severed in order to have a happy home.

Speaking out is not enough, you must also have a listening ear, show little or no criticisms. Be compassionate, mind your speech, let your words be encouraging and edifying, be gentle and respect each other’s opinion to build a happy home and enjoy your marriage.
