When your goal is to earn money from apps then you are in for a costly demise. The idea of "make money from apps" is a dream. Hence the reason the app stores is full of mediocre or worse apps (especially games).
An app is a product and as such your product needs to solve a (real) problem better than what is already on the market. When you build a community and bring value to that community with your app then monetizing engaged users will be easy.
Development costs are dropping and access to "drag and drop" app builders, offshore developers and cheap/free source code mean that anybody can develop an app for very little money. Marketing costs on the other hand are skyrocketing and unless you have a considerable budget and experience your "next great app idea" is going to live amongst all the other zombie apps.
