The Dynamic Dance of Plate Tectonics

The theory of plate tectonics, developed in the mid-20th century, revolutionized our understanding of geography and geology. The Earth's outermost layer, the lithosphere, is fragmented into about a dozen major and several minor tectonic plates. These plates—which include both continental and oceanic crust—float on the semi-fluid, ductile asthenosphere beneath them.
