Bat cause death

Just a bat landing on his face, no wound, no bleeding, yet 19 days later, it claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy. 😱

This tragedy, which occurred in Ontario, Canada, is the first locally transmitted human rabies death in the province in 57 years. The incident happened this summer when a bat suddenly flew onto the boy's face, and he instinctively waved it away.

The father immediately caught the bat and released it outside. The whole family pulled the child over for a thorough examination; there were no bites, no scratches, and not a drop of blood. To any family, this would seem like a minor scare; since there wasn't even a broken skin, they naturally felt no need to go to the hospital.

But what they didn't know was that bat teeth are extremely small; a slight scratch leaves a tiny wound that is invisible to the naked eye.

About 19 days later, the boy began to feel unwell. Initially, it was just numbness and tingling on one side of his face, which then developed into persistent vomiting. Because the family was absolutely certain that "the child was absolutely not bitten," the doctors initially ruled out rabies and treated him for other common illnesses.

This small discrepancy in understanding caused them to miss the crucial window for intervention.

By the time rabies was finally diagnosed, it was too late. The virus had already penetrated the boy's nervous system. Despite the medical team's best efforts and over two weeks of aggressive treatment, his condition deteriorated rapidly and uncontrollably. 💔

In the end, the parents had no choice but to painfully agree to remove life support at his bedside and send their 11-year-old son to his death.

Afterwards, the family agreed to have their heartbreaking story published in the *Canadian Medical Association Journal*. They were willing to reopen their wounds to tell everyone a harsh truth: encountering a bat without a wound does not mean there is no risk of infection. Even brief skin contact with a bat warrants immediate medical attention and vaccination.

Some medical common sense comes at the cost of a life that never had a chance to grow up.
