Chapter One: The Stranger on the Rooftop
The rooftop of Café Clementine wasn’t exactly a secret, but it still felt like her place.
Maya always came up here after closing hours, usually with a leftover slice of peach tart and her headphones in. The city stretched wide in front of her, a sea of golden lights blinking like fireflies. She would sit on the ledge, breathe in the cool air, and wonder if love was real or just something poets made sound prettier than it was.
Tonight, someone else was already there.
A man stood by the edge, his back turned. He wore a black hoodie, sleeves pushed to his elbows, and he didn’t seem surprised by her arrival. He glanced over his shoulder, gave a small nod, and turned back to the view like she was part of the scenery.
Maya hesitated. “You lost?”
“Nope,” he said, not looking at her. “Just hiding.”
She narrowed her eyes. “From what?”
He finally turned. His eyes were tired, but not unkind. “From a life I can’t control.”
Maya sat down a few feet away, not close enough to make it weird, but not far enough to be a stranger either. “Same,” she whispered.
They sat in silence as the wind brushed their cheeks. Somewhere below, a guitar was playing in the street.
After a while, he asked, “Do you believe people meet by accident?”
Maya looked at him carefully. “I don’t know. But this doesn’t feel like one.”
He smiled. Just a little.
