Cancer

Hearing the Word “Cancer” Is a Hard Pill to Swallow

The day you hear the word cancer is a day you never forget.

For many of us, it feels like the ground disappears beneath our feet. Your mind races with questions, fears, and uncertainty. You wonder what comes next, what treatment will be like, and what the future holds.

As a husband and father of three, the diagnosis affected more than just me. My first thoughts were about my family. Would I be here to watch my children grow older? Would I see the milestones still ahead of them? Those questions weighed heavily on me.

What I learned over time is that a diagnosis is only the beginning of the story, not the end of it.

There will be appointments, scans, treatments, and challenges. In my case, every new scan seemed to bring worse news. I went from Stage 3B to Stage 4, and at one point, I was told I had about 21 days left to live.

Hearing the word "terminal" can break a person, but for me, it had the opposite effect. It made me want to fight even harder.

Giving up was never an option. I used every tool in my arsenal and fought every battle that came my way. Through chemotherapy, radiation, setbacks, and uncertainty, I kept moving forward one day at a time.

Today, the fight looks different. The cancer battle may be behind me, but I still face the daily battles that treatment left behind—the side effects, the long-term damage, and the challenges that come with survivorship.

Along the way, I learned an important lesson: never let statistics, timelines, or predictions decide your future. There will be good days and bad days, but there will also be victories, milestones, friendships, and moments of hope that you may not be able to see right now.

If you are newly diagnosed, know that what you are feeling is normal. It is okay to be scared. It is okay to be angry. It is okay to have questions.

Take things one day at a time. Lean on those who understand. Ask questions, learn about your diagnosis, and remember that you do not have to face this journey alone.

I can tell you that hope matters. Some days, you fight for yourself. Some days you fight for the people you love. Either way, keep fighting.

Many of us have walked this road before you, and we are here to support you every step of the way. ❤️🎗️
