A mother fears her 17-year-old son will be left entirely alone after hospital doctors twice missed a mass that marked the return of her stage four cervical cancer. 💔
Candice Powell is fighting for her life after her cervical cancer returned aggressively following three years of remission.
The 29-year-old mother visited Maidstone Hospital last May suffering from frequent vomiting and severe pain.
Doctors performed a CT scan but told her she simply had gastritis before discharging her.
She returned to the hospital two months later when her symptoms failed to improve, only to be sent home for a second time.
Hospital staff rang her the following morning to confess that an abnormality on the initial scan had been completely missed.
By the time the error was spotted, a large mass had formed and the cancer had already progressed to stage four.
The disease has since metastasised across three separate areas of her body, including her left leg.
She has already undergone a hysterectomy and an operation at The Royal Marsden Hospital to remove a tumour the size of a toilet roll tube.
Her son Charlie, 17, lost his father when he was just nine years old and now faces losing his remaining parent.
Standard NHS chemotherapy is scheduled to begin next month, but it is only expected to prolong her life rather than offer a cure.
Her family is now trying to raise £50,000 to fund a private immunotherapy treatment at a specialised oncology clinic in Germany.
A spokesperson for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said they have responded to her concerns directly and will continue to liaise with her.
