Drugs and being Broke
In real talk, drugs are here to stay with us. You probably have been through the murky experiences of having to do drugs or have a relative or friend who’s been through that. But what if that leads to being broke?
Recently, a good friend of mine got lucky to be employed by a local company. As it goes, He is paid quite a good sum of money for a lad his age. I do remember when we were younger and would talk of the future we would have. The jobs we would get, the lives we would live and generally the high-end life we would have had we gotten money. Fast forward to 2021 December, my bosom buddy had his luck.
I remember on that fateful evening we had gone on a spree. ‘One for the road’ they call it. We wanted to celebrate the new milestone so we went to a local restaurant to enjoy ourselves. As it stands, my friend had Kshs.1000 that he had vowed to only use Kshs.300 of it and the rest would be put into other `more important use’. Well he was in for a rude shock!
We began our merry making with a 200ml Chrome drink. Here in the capital Nairobi we call it ‘quarter’. Twenty minutes later we were done and we had to order another bottle. By the time we had been through, the Ksh.1000 that my friend was finished and we had no otherwise but to leave.
Apparently, two months later he reported for the work. The first salary was sweet for him as he clearly put it. He had decided to put some 0f the 50k salary to savings and the rest put in investments. Within two weeks of receiving the salary, he remained with 4k. The 46k he had used on alcohol and partying in the big clubs in the city. As he puts it, he would spend close to 6k a day on that kind of life. As I write this, my good friend is broke. Nothing to show for the seven months he has been working. No investment to show for. Nothing.
This does happen to many of our youths and even to the elderly. Some would even go to extents of not providing for livelihood of their children. Some would go hiding for their families for weeks or months just partying. So as it stands, drugs generally is a social ill amidst us and it is up to everyone to make a decision on it.
It’s up to you Ladies and Gents
That is interesting
