Many women are diagnosed with uterine cysts such as chocolate cysts (endometriosis) or uterine fibroids, but fail to seek treatment, ultimately facing the risk of hysterectomy due to the cysts continuing to grow. If surgery is not desired, how can Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treat chocolate cysts? Dr. Ying shared the story of a 38-year-old patient who discovered she had a 6cm chocolate cyst after two years of infertility. Through TCM treatment to manage the cysts and assist with conception, she successfully gave birth to a baby boy!
👩🏻 38-Year-Old Woman Discovered with 6cm Chocolate Cyst After Two Years of Infertility
A 38-year-old female patient, after two years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive, underwent a physical examination. An ultrasound revealed several chocolate cysts, some of which were 4-6cm in size. Western medicine recommended surgical removal.
The patient wished to avoid surgery and simultaneously conceive, therefore seeking TCM treatment.

During the consultation, it was learned that the patient also experienced intermenstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea, suggesting that her menstrual symptoms and infertility were related to her chocolate fibroid tumor.
The doctor treated the patient with traditional Chinese medicine. Her menstrual cycle returned to normal after the first two periods. After completing the third month of treatment, the patient discovered she had successfully conceived, had a smooth pregnancy, and gave birth to a baby boy!
🔎 Understanding Chocolate Fibroids
Endometriosis refers to the retrograde flow of endometrial tissue into the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic cavity.
These "lost" tissues also shed during menstruation to form menstrual blood, but they cannot be expelled and accumulate, leading to local inflammation and crusting.
If the endometrial tissue retrogrades into the ovaries, it forms a "chocolate fibroid"; if it reaches the uterine muscle layer, it is called "adenomyosis," and there is a possibility of developing an "adenomyoma."
Common symptoms include:
Pelvic pain, such as dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and painful bowel movements.
Menstrual abnormalities, such as excessive menstrual flow, irregular cycles, and abnormal intermenstrual bleeding.
Infertility, i.e., unsuccessful attempts to conceive after more than one year.
❓ Can Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) eliminate chocolate cysts?
TCM treatment focuses on promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, softening and dispersing masses, and combining tonifying and purging methods. The goal is to relieve surface symptoms such as menstrual pain, soften and eliminate lumps, prevent recurrence, and aid in fertility preparation.
Generally, herbal medicine or acupuncture are the main treatment methods. Significant improvement in menstrual symptoms can be seen in the first menstrual period after treatment. Three months of treatment can shrink or eliminate lumps while preventing recurrence.
With a three-month treatment period, chocolate cysts smaller than 3cm can generally disappear completely, and those between 3-6cm can shrink significantly. Cysts larger than 6cm are considered more difficult to treat; during a 3-6 month treatment period, the focus is on controlling their growth and then minimizing their size.

🗒️ Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Pregnancy
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) assisted pregnancy treatment has two main goals:
(1) Treating the Causes of Infertility
For example, conditions such as chocolate cysts, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, luteal insufficiency, thin/thick endometrium, premature ovarian failure, fallopian tube blockage, recurrent miscarriage, etc., or infertility with no identifiable cause, can all achieve significant improvement through TCM treatment.
(2) Increasing the Chances of Pregnancy
During the treatment of the causes of infertility, uterine receptivity can be improved simultaneously, ovarian function strengthened, and follicle quality improved to help increase the chances of pregnancy.
