How to Identify a Fake Online Business

Let me tell you something that happened to someone I know. She saw a post on Facebook. A young woman was advertising a clothing business with fine pictures, good prices, and plenty of testimonials in the comment section. My friend sent her money. The person collected it, sent a tracking number that never worked, and by the time my friend tried to reach her again, the account had disappeared.

Just like that. Money gone.

If you have been on  social media for more than five minutes, you already know this story. Maybe it happened to you. Maybe it happened to someone close to you. Online business scams in Nigeria have become so common that many people are now afraid to buy anything online at all  even from genuine sellers who are doing honest work.

But the truth is, fake online businesses always leave signs. You just need to know what to look for before you send that money.

The Profile Was Created Yesterday

This is the first thing you should check before you do anything else. Go to the Facebook page or Instagram account of that business and look at when it was created.

Most fake online businesses operate on fresh accounts. They create a new page, flood it with stolen product pictures, copy testimonials from other places, and start advertising immediately. If a business account is less than three months old and is already claiming to have thousands of satisfied customers  something is wrong.

A genuine business builds its presence over time. The posts have a history. The engagement is consistent. The page did not appear from nowhere last week.

They Only Accept Bank Transfer  No Other Option

This one is very important. Fake online businesses in Nigeria almost always insist on direct bank transfer as the only payment method. They will tell you that their POS is not working, that their online payment link is having issues, or that bank transfer is faster.

The reason is simple. Bank transfer is the hardest to reverse. Once your money leaves your account and enters theirs, getting it back is nearly impossible without going to the police  and even that is not guaranteed.

Genuine businesses usually offer multiple payment options. They are not afraid of payment methods that offer some protection to the buyer because they have nothing to hide.

The Prices Are Too Good to Be True

You have heard this before but it is worth saying again. When a product that costs eighteen thousand naira everywhere else is being sold for four thousand naira on someone's WhatsApp status  that is not a bargain. That is a trap.

Fake online businesses use impossibly low prices to attract people who are looking for a good deal. And honestly, most of us are looking for a good deal. There is nothing wrong with wanting to save money. But when the price makes no business sense whatsoever, your first question should not be how to send the money, it should be why is this so cheap?

No Physical Address and No Video Content

Ask any serious online business in Nigeria for their physical location and they will tell you. They may not have a big shop but they will show you something: a store, a warehouse, even a small office. They will show you videos of their products, their packaging process, their delivery.

Fake businesses hide behind pictures. They never go live. They never show you a real video of the product in their hands. They never give you a verifiable address. When you ask, they give you excuses or they go silent.

Any business that cannot show you something real is a business that has nothing real to show.

The Testimonials All Sound the Same

Look carefully at the testimonials on that page. Fake businesses either copy testimonials from other pages or write them themselves. They all tend to sound unusually perfect. Nobody ever had a delayed delivery. Nobody ever had the wrong size. Every single customer is completely satisfied and deeply grateful.

Real businesses have real reviews including the occasional complaint and how it was resolved. That is actually a sign of a genuine business, not a bad one. It means real people are buying and real conversations are happening.

What To Do Before You Send Any Money

Before you pay any online business in Nigeria, do these things. Search their name on Google and see what comes up. Ask for a video call to see the product live. Check if other people have reviewed them outside their own page. Ask a question and see how they respond: scammers are often impatient with questions.

Your money is too hard earned to lose to someone who put up a page yesterday. Take five minutes to verify before you pay. Those five minutes could save you from weeks of regret.
