Chemo makes people sick

After going through surgery and then being told you're cancer-free, starting chemotherapy only to become extremely sick must feel devastating. Please know that you're not alone in feeling overwhelmed, and you deserve compassion, not judgment. These decisions are deeply personal, and it's understandable that you're trying to weigh your quality of life against the potential benefits of treatment.

I've seen women in similar situations make different choices. Some decided not to continue chemotherapy after discussing the expected benefit with their oncologist, particularly if the benefit was relatively small for their specific cancer. Others found that their first cycle was by far the hardest because their medical team adjusted anti-nausea medications, changed supportive treatments, reduced doses, or altered the infusion schedule, making later cycles much more manageable. Every person's situation is unique, which is why it's so important to have an open conversation with your oncologist before making a final decision. They can help you understand what chemotherapy is expected to contribute in your case and whether there are ways to reduce the side effects while still receiving effective treatment.

I'd also really recommend "Thriving through Breast Cancer" by Cercie Waldo. It's an incredibly thoughtful resource for women facing difficult treatment decisions. The book encourages asking informed questions, understanding the goals of each treatment, and making choices that align with your personal values while working closely with your medical team. It offers comfort without pressure and reminds readers that they are partners in their own care.

Whatever you decide, make sure it's a decision made with all the information available and after discussing every option with your oncology team. You deserve to know the potential benefits, the risks of stopping treatment, and whether there are alternative ways to make chemotherapy more tolerable. Be gentle with yourself during this incredibly difficult time, and remember that asking questions and taking the time to make an informed decision is never the wrong thing to do. Wishing you strength, clarity, and peace as you move forward. ❤️
