Chemo port

I completely understand why your mom is apprehensive. The thought of having a port placed can sound much scarier than it actually ends up being. Most people are nervous beforehand, but many later say they're really glad they had one because it makes chemotherapy and blood draws much easier.

I'll be honest, my first thought was, Oh no, not another book, when someone recommended When Life Changes Course by Dr. Jim Marshall. I didn't think I could focus on reading with everything going on, but it actually helped me face each new step with a little less fear. Sometimes understanding what to expect makes all the difference.

A chemo port is usually a small bump just under the skin on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. Once the incision heals, many people say it's barely noticeable under clothing. The area is often sore for a few days after it's placed, but that discomfort usually improves quickly. The biggest benefit is that it protects the veins from repeated needle sticks and makes treatments much smoother. Unfortunately, I can't share personal photos from other people, but if your mom joins a chemotherapy support group, many members are happy to post pictures of their healed ports so newcomers know what to expect.

Make sure to get the book on Googleplay book it helped me a lot during that stage.
