A Little Piece of My Journey...
On January 8, I was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma breast cancer.
On February 12, I underwent surgery to remove the cancer. As part of the procedure, I also had a breast reduction so that both breasts would be the same size. I was initially told my recovery would take six weeks, but at my follow-up appointment, I learned I had delayed healing, which meant even more time off to recover.
After that came 3½ weeks of radiation treatments. On May 13, I had the privilege of ringing the bell, marking the end of my radiation treatments. The very next day, May 14, I walked across the stage and graduated from college.
When I tell you that finishing my last semester while fighting cancer was one of the hardest things I've ever done, that would be an understatement. There were days I wanted to quit, but God carried me every step of the way. Today, I am taking Tamoxifen, which I'll continue for the next five years, as part of my treatment plan.
Even though treatment has ended, my journey isn't over. I'm now experiencing swelling and have started physical and occupational therapy. Next week, I'll be seeing my oncologist because I'm having significant leg pain and swelling in my ankles that has made it painful to walk. I've also been referred to a lymphedema specialist, and I'm praying for answers and relief.
On top of the physical challenges, this journey has taken a financial toll. Because my medical leave ran out, I had to go an entire month without a paycheck. I've been doing my best to catch up, but between multiple specialist visits and $100 co-pays, it's been overwhelming. The bills don't stop because you're fighting cancer. This morning, I even called T-Mobile to see if I could make payment arrangements to keep my phone from being disconnected, but unfortunately, there was nothing they could do. That adds another layer of stress because I depend on my phone to stay connected with my doctors and medical team.
Through it all, I am choosing to turn every worry over to Jesus.
Philippians 4:6–7 reminds us:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Thank you for allowing me to share my heart and simply vent for a moment. If you've been praying for me, encouraging me, checking on me, or supporting me in any way, please know I appreciate you more than words can express.
To all of my SiSters who are fighting breast cancer or walking through recovery, I am lifting you up in prayer. May God continue to strengthen you, heal you, and remind you that you are never alone.
God is still faithful. My story isn't over, and neither is yours. 💕🎀🙏
