SELF BREAST EXAMINATION a primary factor in the prevention of Breast Cancer

Introduction

   Globally majority of women around the world are unaware of self breast examination while majority are aware but do not practice it.

   The increase rate of breast cancer patients is as a result of negligence on its early stage of prevention.

What is Self Breast Examination ?

Self breast examination can be defined as a careful process that involves massaging the breast for detection of lump or abnormal growth within the breast usually by one self.

How can one perform Self Breast Examination ?

   In performing self breast examination, the woman will need to lay supine in a flat surface, that is laying down with the head facing upwards exposing the breast, after which a careful massaging is done round the breast to detect the presence of lump or abnormal growth.

What are the Advantages of Self Breast Examination ?

   The advantages of self breast Examination includes the following: 

1. Early detection and removal of lump.

2. It prevents one from treating cancer due to late detection.

3. It prevents unnecessary spending on drugs and chemotherapy.

4. It helps and allows women at high risk of developing breast cancer to be confident about their status.

How Often Should Self Breast Examination Be Performed ?

   Self breast examination should be performed regularly, at least once a week.

Advice for care

For women who cannot properly perform self breast examination, it is advisable to go and see a doctor, for proper knowledge of once status, especially women at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Note - The need for continuous breast examination cannot be overemphasied because early detection and removal of lump remains the primary prevention and treatment of breast cancer. If left undetected for long, the rate of regrowth even after it is then removed is high. Therefore, early detection of lump remains key in prevention of breast cancer.
