The Day I Almost Lost ₦50,000 Because of One Old SIM Card

My name na Tunde, and I be Lagos boy.

That Tuesday evening, my whole street dey shout. Everybody phone dey ring kpa kpa kpa.

"Ah! NERSI don enter!"

"My own don enter o, ₦50,000!"

"Mama Nkechi own don enter!"

Me, I just dey look them like mumu. I check my OPay — ₦0.00. I check my SMS — nothing. I check again — nothing.

My heart don dey cut. Why everybody go collect, na only me remain?

I go meet my neighbour, Baba Musa. Baba Musa dey laugh, e show me him phone. ₦50,000 don enter him OPay.

"Baba Musa, how you take get am?" I ask am.

Baba Musa say, "Na NIN dem use. The number wey you use for NIN, na there dem go send am."

That moment, my brain reset.

NIN? Which number I use for NIN?

Na my old MTN number! The number wey I don abandon since 2021. The number wey I don give my younger brother, wey e don lose the SIM for inside bus for Ikorodu.

I don dey use new number for two years now. My OPay na new number. My WhatsApp na new number. Everything na new number.

But my NIN still carry old number.

Na that moment I understand — my ₦50,000 don go meet ghost number.

I no sleep that night. I dey think, "So ₦50,000 go just waste like that?"

My Journey to NIMC Office

Next morning, I run go NIMC office for Ikeja. Queue long like fuel queue for Christmas. Sun dey beat me. But I no gree.

After four hours, dem finally call me.

"Oga, you want to change your phone number on your NIN? Make we check the applicable fee and process."

I quickly followed the official procedure. No time to waste.

Dem update my number to my new one.

As I dey waka go house, my phone vibrate.

Ding!

I look am. My hand dey shake.

"NERSI: You have been selected for ₦50,000 relief. Reply YES to confirm."

Ah! I nearly shout for road. People think say I don mad. I nearly reply YES faster than I dey reply my girlfriend!

But wait first! Before replying to any unexpected government grant or relief message, make sure the programme and sender are genuine. No share your OTP, PIN or banking details with anybody.

Thirty minutes later, in my dream, another message enter:

"Payment Received! ₦50,000 from NERSI. Successful."

I kneel down for road. I no shame. God don answer my prayer!

The Big Lesson I Learned

That day I learn one big lesson: For Nigeria, no be only to hustle. You must make sure your personal information dey correct too.

Your NIN, phone number and other important records should be properly updated whenever your details change.

One small mistake fit cause unnecessary stress when you need to access an important service.

And since that day, I don dey also write for LODPOST. Because even if government relief programmes are occasional, writing and creating useful content can become another opportunity to earn over time.

My LODPOST dashboard displays a CPM figure of $7. If that were a guaranteed $7 per 1,000 monetized views, 143 monetized views would be approximately $1. However, actual earnings depend on monetized views, traffic quality, advertiser demand and other platform factors. Earnings are not guaranteed.

Moral of the Story

Check your NIN phone number today. Make sure your personal information is up to date, and always verify government grant messages through official channels before responding.

Do not allow one old SIM card to become a source of unnecessary problems!

Have You Checked Yours?

Have you ever changed your phone number and forgotten to update it on an important account or document?

Share your experience in the comments. Your story might help someone avoid the same mistake!
