Your kidneys work 24 hours a day to filter your blood and remove waste from your body. But many of us are eating foods every day that are slowly destroying these vital organs without knowing. In Nigeria, kidney failure cases are increasing every year, and diet is one of the biggest causes. Here are 5 common foods that are damaging your kidneys.

1. Excessive Salt and Seasoning Cubes

We Nigerians love salty food and plenty seasoning cubes. But too much salt increases your blood pressure, and high blood pressure is the number 1 enemy of your kidneys. When your blood pressure is high, your kidneys have to work extra hard to filter blood, and over time they get damaged. Reduce your salt intake and don't use 3-4 cubes for one small pot of soup.

2. Sugary Drinks and Soft Drinks

Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, energy drinks, and even bottled fruit juices with added sugar are very bad for your kidneys. High sugar leads to diabetes and obesity, and both conditions damage the kidneys seriously. Studies show that people who drink 2 or more sugary drinks per day have higher protein in their urine, which is an early sign of kidney damage. Drink more water instead.

3. Processed and Red Meats - Sausages, Bacon, Suya, Hot Dogs

This is the one that will shock you. That delicious suya, kilishi, sausages, bacon, and hot dogs you love are loaded with sodium and preservatives that overwork your kidneys. Red meat in general is high in protein, and when you eat too much protein, your kidneys must work harder to remove the waste. Eating processed meat more than 3 times a week can increase your risk of kidney disease by 30%.

4. Alcohol and Excessive Painkillers

While not exactly a food, many Nigerians take alcohol and painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and diclofenac almost every day. Alcohol dehydrates your body and makes it difficult for your kidneys to regulate your body fluids. When you combine alcohol with regular use of painkillers without prescription, you are putting double pressure on your kidneys. If you must drink, drink moderately and drink a lot of water.

5. Instant Noodles and Fast Foods

Indomie, fried foods, shawarma, burgers, and chips are high in salt, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives. Instant noodles contain a preservative called Tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) which in large amounts can affect your kidney function. Fast foods also cause weight gain and high cholesterol, which indirectly damage your kidneys.

How to Protect Your Kidneys:

 •  Drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily

 •  Reduce salt and seasoning cubes

 •  Eat more fruits and vegetables like watermelon, garden eggs, and cucumber

 •  Go for regular checkups, check your blood pressure and blood sugar

 •  Exercise regularly and avoid self-medication

Early Signs Your Kidneys Are in Trouble

Many Nigerians don't know their kidneys are failing until it's late. Watch out for these signs: Swollen legs and face in the morning, constant tiredness, changes in urine color or foaming urine, difficulty sleeping, and persistent back pain. If you notice any of these, please visit a hospital immediately. Don't go to a chemist or herbalist first.

Conclusion:

Your kidneys are priceless. Once they fail, dialysis and transplant cost millions of Naira. Prevention is cheaper than cure. Start reducing these 5 foods today and your kidneys will thank you for many years.
