Apple is planning to shake up the changes drastically with the new iPhone lineup. First of all, the base iPhone 18 is rumored to have a whopping 12GB of RAM, which is a giant leap by industry insiders when comparing the 8GB RAM of the current standard model to 12GB memory. By this, Apple sets a tone that the concept of performance enhancement is not just for the iPhone Pro versions, but it applies to every iPhone model.
The choice of the company is perfectly consistent with the features of AI that are being increasingly implemented into the device. Besides improved multitasking and smoother long-term usage, the phone will be ready for on-device AI as well. AI and machine-learning-based iOS upgrades require more RAM, thus the iPhone 18 will be able to load the larger tasks quicker, process the data at higher speeds, and perform more app runs in the background without any lags.
A major factor in the upgrade could be Apple's rumored shift to LPDDR5X memory modules that typically start at 12GB. This shift will not only increase performance efficiency with memory, but will also help performance remain more consistent under heavy use in situations such as gaming, photo editing and AI-related tasks.
The iPhone 18 family will probably draw from a well-known design language; however, performance improvements will likely be the primary focus for the family. This memory refresh suggests that Apple is attempting to future-proof the hardware for years of software support. If a consumer typically keeps their iPhone for about 3 to 4 years this is especially advantageous because the higher memory will provide easier device performance as apps and versions of iOS consume more resources over time.
While this upgrade sounds exciting, we still await confirmation from Apple. It is possible launch timelines will vary as some analysts theorize that the Pro and Pro Max iPhone 18 could debut sooner and then the standard iPhone 18 could be an extended schedule from the launch (perhaps a week, ideally not longer). If this timing does take place, consumers as the first adopters of the iPhone 18 may have to be patient but the wait will potentially be worth it.
Are you better off waiting for the iPhone 18?
If you have a functioning phone already, it might be smart to wait for the iPhone 18 considering many of the features on the new phone will likely lead to a more longevity perception, compared with older phones. However, for the tech consumer interested in a new phone, the current line-up for the iPhone 17 should be sufficiently powerful.
To finish, the 12GB RAM option in the base iPhone 18 model is a definite sign from Apple that they are moving towards performance and longevity. With trends moving towards AI based experiences in tech, this is an aspect that will continue to play into future performance of the iPhones etc.
