Atiku Abubakar Condemns Rivers State Sole Administrator, Calls Planned Local Election Illegal
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State as illegal, warning of severe implications for Nigeria’s democracy if the planned local government election proceeds under his leadership.
Atiku’s remarks, posted on X were in response to elder statesman Atedo Peterside’s condemnation of the proposed Rivers State local council polls. Peterside had cautioned the Nigerian government against undermining the country’s democratic process with the election.
In his statement, Atiku echoed Peterside’s concerns, describing the planned polls as an “absurdity” and criticizing the role of an “illegal sole administrator, unknown to our constitution,” in conducting the election. He emphasized the broader consequences for Nigeria, stating, “It is in one’s interest to help put out the fire in your neighbour’s house to safeguard against your house being torched.”
“I join other men and women of goodwill to condemn this absurdity unequivocally,” Atiku added, urging action to address the situation in Rivers State.
The controversy surrounding the local government election has sparked widespread debate, with Atiku’s comments amplifying calls to protect Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
