“I am convinced that ALL boda boda should be banned from the streets of ALL Kenya’s major cities and towns. No modern city should tolerate such chaos, illegality, terrible aesthetics, and indiscipline on its roads. Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.”
That’s the powerful statement Prof. Makau Mutua posted on his official X account, and it didn’t take long before it lit up conversations online.
Prof. Mutua, who advises President Ruto on constitutional matters, didn’t hold back. He believes boda bodas are now a serious problem in towns — not just because of accidents, but because of the disorder and poor image they create.
He mentioned that no modern city should allow such lawlessness on its roads. For him, it's not just about safety, but also how our cities look and function.
But his post got people talking. Some agreed and said it's time for a big change in how boda bodas operate. Others felt banning them completely would destroy livelihoods — especially for young people who rely on them to survive.
One user replied, “Instead of banning, why not organise and train them?”
Mutua’s words may have been harsh, but they’ve sparked a conversation Kenya can’t ignore. With rising urban chaos and transport problems, maybe this is the debate we all needed to start.
