Betrayed at the Highest Level: Gachagua Claims Ruto Ordered His ‘Slow, Undetectable’ Assassination

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in Kenya, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly alleged a state-sponsored plot to assassinate him, purportedly orchestrated by President William Ruto. These claims have intensified public discourse and raised serious concerns about political stability in the country.

Gachagua, who served as Deputy President from September 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024, has had a tumultuous relationship with President Ruto. The fallout between the two leaders culminated in Gachagua's impeachment on corruption and inciting ethnic divisions. Since his removal from office, Gachagua has been an outspoken critic of the current administration, alleging various forms of political persecution.

In a letter dated April 15, 2025, addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and copied to President Ruto, Gachagua detailed a series of incidents he believes constitute attempts on his life. He claimed that his security detail was withdrawn in a deliberate move to expose him to harm, and that organized criminal gangs, allegedly in collusion with the police, have targeted him and his family. Gachagua also alleged that he and his family are under constant surveillance by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), with operatives trailing them in unmarked vehicles.(Sauce, Capital FM)

In response to these allegations, Inspector General Kanja, through National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, stated that the police are ready to provide security to the former Deputy President depending on his needs. He advised Gachagua to liaise with police officers at all levels should he require additional security measures and to notify the police in advance of his movements and public engagements to facilitate proper planning and coordination of his security arrangements.(Nation Africa)

The public's reaction to Gachagua's allegations has been mixed. Some citizens have expressed skepticism, recalling past statements made by Gachagua during his tenure. Others have called for an independent investigation to verify the legitimacy of the assassination plot claims. Social media platforms have seen a surge in discussions, with hashtags like #ProtectGachagua and #StatePlot trending as more Kenyans demand transparency.

Political analysts suggest that these allegations, if proven true, could have significant implications for the country's political landscape. They emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, are protected from harm.

The unfolding saga of the alleged assassination plot against Rigathi Gachagua highlights the deepening cracks in Kenya’s political leadership. As the nation holds its breath, the demand for truth and accountability grows louder.
