Beware of your family members

He threw his cousin's two children from the fourth floor, one was 5 years old and the other was only 8 months old. Then he jumped himself. Before jumping he said to the 12-year-old boy who had caught up to dissuade him, "Come over again and kill even you." All this was because his cousin was unwilling to follow him. And his cousin, who had helped him when he was most depressed, borrowed money to help him pay off his debts, and let him live in his own home.

On the morning of December 24, 1963, Block J, Kwun Tong Migrant Housing Estate, Hong Kong. 33-year-old Xie Cuilin was collecting things on the balcony when she saw her neighbor Hui Bilan carrying her 8-month-old son and her 5-year-old eldest son upstairs carrying a vegetable basket. She was getting ready to help when a young man suddenly rushed out of the stairs. He was wearing a dark suit and black leather shoes, his eyes were fierce, and he said to Hui Bilan, "Today we must make our words clear. Do not think anything better."

Xie Cuilin recognized him as a friend of Xu Bilan and his wife, a gangster. She retreated into the house and heard the two walking towards Xu Bilan's house.

A few minutes later, the paper shop owner Liu Le heard a loud noise and walked out to see a 5-year-old boy lying in a bamboo strip with blood oozing from his forehead. He was calling the cohort for an ambulance when another loud thud behind him - the 8-month-old baby fell from a height, his head hit the cement floor, brains overflowing. Then there was another sound, and the young man also jumped down, his limbs twisted, his seven tips bleeding, and he died on the spot.

At the same time, screams came from the fourth floor: "Murder! Xu Bilan was being axed to death!"

Xu Bilan collapsed in front of her house, covered in blood, with blood-stained suspenders, baby shoes, handcuffs and a wooden comb scattered around her. Police arrived and confirmed that the two boys died on the spot. A blood-stained cane knife and a rolling pin with the killer’s fingerprints — the man who fell from the building — were found at the scene.

His name is Huang Ming, 23 years old, and a distant cousin of Hui Bilan’s husband, Chan Yong Chang. He joined the underworld after smuggling to Hong Kong from China and owed a lot of debt. His cousin Chan Yong-chang helped him pay off his debt and let him live in his own home. But Huang Ming fell in love with his cousin Hui Bilan.

During Chen Yongchang's hospitalization, Huang Ming took advantage of the situation and tried to violate Xu Bilan several times. He also wrote a letter back to his hometown asking for money, trying to win her heart. After Chan Yong-chang was discharged from the hospital, he heard rumors that the couple had a big fight over it. They could not  get rid of him when they moved, called the police, and hid at relatives' homes. Huang Ming came to the door and threatened, "If you do not marry me, you couple will not have a better time."

On the morning of December 24, 1963, Huang Ming came to the door again and asked Xu Bilan to follow him. She refused. He took the knife and rolling pin and slashed at her. Her 5-year-old son ran out of the house and was grabbed by Huang Ming and thrown from the fourth floor. The 8 month old baby could not speak yet and was also thrown down. Then he jumped himself.

Chan Yong-chang worked the day shift that day and did not get home until 7pm. He knelt in front of the bodies of his wife and son and cried, "It is all my fault. I killed them." Time and time again, he forgave his cousin and again and again believed that he would change. He thought that giving money, a place to stay, and an opportunity would get him back a gratitude. What he got back were three lives.

When Huang Ming jumped from the building, a 12-year-old boy knelt on the ground and begged him to let the baby go. He did not stop. When he jumped, he was probably still thinking: I can not get it, and no one can think of it. He got it - he died with them. On the day of the funeral, Chen Yong Chang stood in front of the funeral hall with his only surviving eldest son in his arms. He did not cry, he just stood. He did not know whom he should really be angry with. With cousin? He is dead. With yourself? He also has a child to raise.

Xu Bilan's godfather, Wu Fei, later told reporters that he had advised the couple not to be soft-hearted. But Chen Yong Chang said, “He is my cousin after all.” He was too kind. He was so merciful that he gave his wife, his two sons, into the hands of a madman. The madman lived up to his kindness - he killed them all. Then he died himself. Chan Yong Chang never married again. He raised his eldest son by himself. He did not know how to explain to his son how his mother and brother died. All he said was, "Dad, I am sorry for you."
