After thirteen passengers jumped out of the basket, everyone thought the worst was over.

Unexpectedly, the weight suddenly lessened, and the burning balloon shot upwards, carrying the remaining eight survivors into the sky.

The survivors on the ground could only look up, watching their companions engulfed in flames, unable to reach them.

Minutes later, four people plummeted from the sky, and four others fell to the ground with the burning basket.

This wasn't a "hot air balloon explosion" as some online headlines claimed, but rather an aerial fire that started inside the basket and spiraled completely out of control.

On the morning of June 21, 2025, Playa Grande, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, welcomed a perfect weekend for tourism.

Surrounded by canyons, Playa Grande is a famous hot air balloon destination in Brazil, with approximately twenty-five to thirty balloons taking to the skies daily during peak season.

That day, about thirty hot air balloons took off, their colorful balloons scattered against the morning light and over the canyons, creating a scene resembling a tourism advertisement.

One of the hot air balloons belonged to the Sobrevoar tourism company. There were 21 people in the basket, including 20 passengers and one pilot.

The sightseeing flight, arranged by the company, was originally scheduled to last several tens of minutes. When the passengers boarded the basket, no one noticed the impending malfunction. ([Reuters][1])

The pilot, Elvis Debem Crescentio, was legally qualified and had hundreds of hours of flying experience.

According to his testimony, just minutes after takeoff, a flame suddenly appeared near the spare blowtorch at the bottom of the basket.

This area contained fuel containers, fabric, and spare gas cylinders; once ignited, the fire could easily spread rapidly along the items inside the basket.

Upon discovering the fire, Elvis immediately tried to use the fire extinguisher inside the basket.

However, he told police that the extinguisher did not spray properly after being pressed, quickly eliminating the best opportunity to extinguish the initial fire.

The pilot could only change course, descending the balloon as quickly as possible in an attempt to reach the ground before the fire became completely out of control. ([Folha de S.Paulo][2])

After flames erupted from the bottom of the basket, chaos immediately ensued among the twenty-one people.

Some tried to pat out the flames, some backed away, and others kept urging the pilot to descend quickly.

But a hot air balloon is not like a helicopter; it cannot descend precisely using its engines, nor can it suddenly stop in mid-air.

It can only slowly change its altitude and direction by adjusting the hot air inside the balloon and coordinating with the wind.

While controlling the descent, the pilot instructed the passengers to crouch low and jump as soon as the basket approached the ground.

For the passengers, it was a choice with almost no time to think.

Jumping too early could result in a fall; jumping too late could allow the fire to break the ropes or cause the balloon to rise again.

When the basket finally approached the ground, Elvis shouted for everyone to jump immediately, and he followed the passengers.

Thirteen people successfully jumped from the basket; although some suffered burns, fractures, or other injuries, all survived.

However, not everyone could cross the towering basket wall at the same time.

Some may have been unable to do so quickly due to age or physical condition, while others hesitated and missed the brief opportunity to land. ([AP News][3])

The departure of the thirteen people instantly reduced the balloon's weight by hundreds of kilograms.

Ground crews were unable to hold onto the sudden buoyancy, and the burning balloon rose rapidly again.

The eight people remaining in the basket, who could have risked jumping, were now lifted to a potentially fatal height.

Some people tumbled out of the basket as the flames approached, their bodies plummeting rapidly through the air.

Publicly released video footage shows at least two figures falling from beside the burning balloon, while ground witnesses could only scream in terror.

Ultimately, four passengers died from the fall, and four others were found in the charred wreckage of the basket.

The accident resulted in eight deaths and thirteen survivors, becoming one of the deadliest hot air balloon accidents in Brazilian history. ([cbm.sc.gov.br][4])

Among the victims were couples, mothers and daughters, a doctor, a bank employee, a teacher, and an athlete.

Some were on vacation with their partners, some were accompanying their mothers to complete their bucket lists, and others simply wanted to see the canyon from the air.

That morning, they lined up like other tourists to board the gondola, taking photos, chatting, and waiting for a romantic aerial journey.

No one could have predicted that, minutes later, the key to survival wouldn't be a seat, physical strength, or experience.

But rather, it would be whether they could immediately climb over the railing and jump without hesitation when the gondola briefly approached the ground.

After receiving the report, fire and rescue units dispatched helicopters, ambulances, and a large number of personnel to search the crash area.

Because the gondola, balloon, and the victims were scattered in different locations, the search area had to be continuously expanded.

When firefighters arrived, some debris was still burning, and the surrounding grass was blackened by the flames.

It was ultimately confirmed at the scene that four bodies were inside the gondola, and four others were scattered in the nearby area. ([cbm.sc.gov.br][4])

The most important question after the accident was: why did the spare blowtorch inside the gondola suddenly catch fire?

The pilot initially stated that the fire likely originated from an auxiliary blowtorch located at the bottom of the gondola, used to ignite the main burner.

Police also investigated whether he forgot to shut off the equipment, or whether there was accidental contact between the fabric, fuel cylinders, and the high temperature.

The company emphasized that both the balloon and the pilot had the necessary permits, and that no similar accidents had occurred in the past.

Out of respect for the deceased and their families, the company announced an indefinite suspension of all flight operations following the accident. ([Folha de S.Paulo][2])

The investigation did not go smoothly at first.

Police needed to recover the fire extinguisher, spare blowtorch, fuel system, and gondola wreckage to reconstruct the location of the fire.

The fire extinguisher and blowtorch were later recovered, but some items had been picked up or moved by unsuspecting members of the public.

This means that the condition of the equipment when it was discovered may not be exactly the same as its condition at the moment of the accident.

Police were therefore unable to determine whether the fire was caused by a malfunction, human error, or an accident based on a single device. ([CNN Brasil][5])

Santa Catarina State Police questioned more than 20 people, including survivors, the driver, witnesses, and representatives from the hot air balloon and fire extinguisher manufacturers.

Investigators also analyzed forensic reports, on-site investigation data, and even obtained footage of the incident recorded by a pair of smart glasses.

In October 2025, police completed their criminal investigation and concluded that the existing evidence was insufficient to prove that anyone intentionally or negligently caused the fire.

Therefore, police did not file criminal charges against the driver, the tour company, or anyone else, and submitted the complete case file to the prosecutor's office for review. ([UOL News][6])

The fact that no one was charged does not mean that there were no device or safety issues in the incident.

Both the driver and survivors stated that the fire extinguisher in the basket failed to function at the most critical moment.

However, the investigation could not prove whether it was originally malfunctioning, used incorrectly, or whether the fire and the conditions at the scene caused it to malfunction.

Similarly, the spare blowtorch was considered relevant to the height of the fire, but there was insufficient evidence to prove that someone forgot to turn it off or violated operating procedures.

In criminal law, suspicion is insufficient for conviction; for the eight families who lost loved ones, this answer is far from complete.

Hot air balloons have always been associated with romance and tranquility.

They lack high-speed propellers and deafening engines, simply drifting slowly across the sky with the wind.

But their ability to fly is inherently built upon flames, fuel, a massive balloon, and limited control.

Once the fire source is in the wrong location, the pilot can do far less than passengers imagine.

The most tragic aspect of this accident is not just that eight tourists became victims.

It's that the thirteen survivors, at the moment they jumped from the basket, may have genuinely believed that others would soon follow.

Only when the weight lessened and the balloon suddenly ascended did they realize that their escape had also closed the final window to their companions.

No one should blame those who successfully jumped.

Amidst flames, thick smoke, screams, and constantly shifting altitudes, no passenger could simultaneously calculate weight, buoyancy, and the evacuation speed of everyone.

What truly needs to be re-examined is why a sightseeing device carrying twenty-one people could so quickly descend into irreversible chaos with just one torch catching fire and one malfunctioning fire extinguisher.

Before the tragedy, everyone saw the morning light, the canyon, and the colorful balloons.

After the tragedy, people realized that the difference between romance and death can be as short as a few minutes and a single, unextinguished fire.
