BRITAINS MOST TALKED ABOUT RULER : KING HERNY THE VIII

King Henry VIII was one of the most famous kings in English history. He was born on 28 June 1491 and became King of England on 21 April 1509 after the death of his father, Henry VII. He ruled England until his death on 28 January 1547.

Henry VIII belonged to the Tudor dynasty and is particularly remembered for his six marriages, his break with the authority of the Pope, and the English Reformation.

1. Early Life

Henry VIII was the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. His elder brother, Arthur, was originally expected to become king.

When Arthur died in 1502, Henry became heir to the English throne. He became king at the age of 17 following his father’s death in 1509.

2. Henry VIII as King

Henry wanted England to be a powerful European kingdom. During his reign, England was involved in several wars, particularly against France and Scotland.

He also strengthened royal authority and spent heavily on his court, palaces, ships and military campaigns.

3. Henry VIII and the Church

One of the most important events of Henry VIII’s reign was his break with the Roman Catholic Church.

Initially, Henry was a Catholic and strongly opposed Protestant ideas. In 1521, he wrote against Martin Luther and was given the title “Defender of the Faith” by Pope Leo X.

However, Henry later wanted his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled because they had not produced a surviving male heir.

When the Pope did not grant the annulment, Henry moved toward separating the English Church from papal authority.

Act of Supremacy, 1534

In 1534, Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, declaring Henry the Supreme Head of the Church of England.

This marked a major step in the English Reformation.

4. Dissolution of the Monasteries

Between 1536 and 1540, Henry’s government closed many monasteries and religious houses in England.

This process is known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Their lands and property were transferred to the Crown and, in many cases, sold or granted to nobles and other supporters.
