My friend bought a "Samsung S23" in Port Harcourt for N250k last month. After 2 weeks, camera became blurry and battery died in 3 hours. When we checked IMEI, it was fake MTK phone, not Samsung.

Fake phones everywhere in Nigeria in 2026. Here is how to check if your phone is original before you pay money.

My Result:

- Phone Checked: Samsung and Infinix

- Method Used: IMEI + App test

- Time to Check: 2 minutes

- Money Saved: N250k

1. Check IMEI Number (Most Important)

Every original phone has IMEI.

How to check:

- Dial *#06# on your phone

- You will see 15-digit IMEI number

- Copy that number

- Go to www.imei.info and paste it

- If it shows your phone model, it is original. If it shows "Unknown" or different model, it is fake.

For Tecno, Infinix, Samsung, you can also check on their official website.

I checked my friend's fake S23 - IMEI showed "S5 copy" not S23.

2. Check With CPU-Z App

Fake phones use cheap processor but claim to be Snapdragon.

- Download CPU-Z from Play Store

- Open it

- Check Processor, RAM, and Storage

- If phone says 8GB RAM but CPU-Z shows 3GB, na fake.

Real Samsung S23 has Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Fake ones show MediaTek MT6580 - very old.

3. Check Camera and Build Quality

Original phone camera is sharp. Fake phone camera is blurry even with many megapixels.

Test:

- Open camera and zoom 2x. Original stays clear, fake becomes noisy.

- Check weight - fake phones are lighter, plastic feels cheap.

- Check screen - original AMOLED is bright, fake LCD is dull.

- Check logo - fake Samsung logo sometimes wrong spelling like "Samsang"

4. Check Warranty and Box

Original phones come with:

- Sealed box with IMEI matching phone

- Charger is original and heavy

- Warranty card with NCC number for Nigeria

- Manual in good English

Fake box has no seal, charger is light, no warranty.

5. Buy From Trusted Place + Use Code

Secret codes to test original:

- Samsung: Dial *#0*# to test screen, sensor, camera

- Tecno/Infinix: Dial *#87# for factory test

- iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About > Check Model Number. If starts with M, new. If F, refurbished.

Where to buy original in Nigeria:

- Slot, Pointek, Jumia official store

- Don't buy from road side if you no sabi check

- Ask for receipt with IMEI written

How I Now Buy Phone in 2026:

1. I dial *#06# and copy IMEI

2. I check on imei.info before paying

3. I install CPU-Z to confirm RAM

4. I test camera zoom

5. I collect receipt with IMEI

Since I started this, I never buy fake again.

3 Mistakes That Make People Buy Fake:

1. Looking for cheap price - original S23 cannot be N80k. If too cheap, na fake.

2. Not checking IMEI on the spot - check before you give money

3. Trusting Computer Village without testing - always test

Conclusion

Don't lose N200k to fake phone. Use IMEI check now. It takes 2 minutes.
