How to Make Cornflakes: Ingredients and Process

Cornflakes are a popular, crunchy breakfast cereal enjoyed worldwide for their light texture and versatility. While most are commercially produced, you can easily make them at home with simple ingredients and steps.

Ingredients:

2 cups cornmeal (yellow or white)

1/4 cup sugar (optional, for sweetness)

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups water

Cooking spray or oil (for baking sheet)

Process:

1. Prepare the mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, sugar, and salt. Gradually add water while stirring to create a smooth, thick batter without lumps.

2. Cook the batter: Pour the mixture into a pot and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until it thickens into a firm, dough-like paste. This step ensures the cornmeal is fully cooked before baking.

3. Spread the paste: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Spread the corn paste thinly and evenly over the sheet using a spatula.

4. Bake until crisp: Place the sheet in the oven and bake for about 40–50 minutes, or until the paste dries completely and becomes crisp.

5. Break into flakes: Once cooled, gently break the sheet into small flakes. For extra crunch, you can toast the flakes for an additional 5 minutes.

6. Store: Keep your homemade cornflakes in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

These homemade cornflakes are healthy, free from preservatives, and can be enjoyed with milk, yogurt, or as a snack. You can also experiment by adding honey, cinnamon, or nuts for extra flavor.
