I Tried 5 Microtask Websites for One Week — Here’s What I Learned

Microtask websites have become a popular way to make money online by completing small online tasks. These microtask jobs can include surveys, data labeling, AI training, image categorization, transcription, research, voice recordings, and other simple tasks.

I tested five popular microtask websites to see which platforms are worth your time and which ones are better for occasional extra income.

1. Clickworker

Clickworker is one of the most flexible microtask platforms because it offers different types of online tasks. Depending on your qualifications and location, you may find AI training, surveys, data categorization, text tasks, photo and video tasks, audio recordings, and app testing.

The main advantage is variety. Instead of relying on one type of microtask job, you can choose different tasks when they become available.

Best for: task variety and flexible online work.

2. Toloka

Toloka focuses heavily on short online tasks related to data processing, AI, and machine learning. Tasks can be simple, but earnings depend on the task, your accuracy, and whether your work is accepted.

For this reason, the important question isn't simply how much a paid microtask offers. You also need to consider how long it takes to complete.

Best for: repetitive tasks and AI-related microjobs.

3. Prolific

Prolific is different from traditional microtask websites because it focuses mainly on paid research studies and surveys.

The platform can be attractive if you prefer answering questions rather than labeling images or completing repetitive data tasks. However, study availability depends on your profile and current demand.

Best for: paid surveys and online research studies.

4. Appen

Appen has offered projects involving search evaluation, data collection, annotation, language work, and AI-related tasks.

Unlike some traditional microtask websites, projects can sometimes be longer and require specific qualifications. Availability also varies by country, language, and project requirements.

Best for: people looking for AI and data-related online jobs.

5. OneForma

OneForma offers remote opportunities involving data collection, annotation, language tasks, AI projects, and other online work.

For multilingual users, this can be an interesting option because some projects require specific languages or regional knowledge.

Best for: multilingual users and AI-related projects.

Which Microtask Website Is Best?

After comparing these five microtask websites, I found that there is no single platform that is perfect for everyone.

Your results can depend on:

• Your country and language

• Available microtask jobs

• Your qualifications

• Task completion speed

• Accuracy and acceptance rates

• Payment options

• Time spent searching for good tasks

The best way to measure microtask earnings is by calculating your effective hourly rate:

Total earnings ÷ total time spent = effective hourly rate

A task paying $0.20 may look attractive until you discover that it takes several minutes to complete.

Are Microtask Websites Worth It?

Yes, for extra money. No, as a guaranteed full-time income.

Legitimate microtask websites can be useful if you want flexible online work, paid tasks from home, or a way to make extra money online during your free time.

My biggest takeaway is simple: don't focus only on how much a microtask pays. Focus on how much you earn for your time.

That is the difference between a microtask job worth doing and one that simply wastes your time.
