Manchester United's poor form continued after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge. The Red Devils went into the match hoping to secure their second Premier League win of the season. What makes the defeat even more painful for United fans is that, for a while, it looked like they actually had a chance of winning the match, especially in the first half. However, they ultimately failed to convert their chances.
Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo was arguably United's liveliest player on the pitch. However, he failed to make the most of his opportunities in the first half.
He missed two chances, while the other two were blocked or saved by the goalkeeper. In one of the chances he missed, he appeared to have been fouled by Chelsea's Wesley Fofana in the penalty area. Rather than going down to draw a penalty and potentially get Fofana sent off, he chose to take the shot. It wasn't necessarily a bad decision if he had scored. However, he completely missed the post, sending the ball out for a goal kick.Matheus Cunha thought he had scored for Manchester United in the 34th minute and even celebrated with a dance alongside his teammates, but his goal was eventually ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
In the second half, Chelsea initially weren't necessarily the better side. However, they knew how to take their chances, and Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute.Ultimately, prone to errors only in a Manchester United jersey and not an Argentina one, Lisandro Martinez cost United dearly when he aimed an elbow at Fofana inside the penalty area. He received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 63rd minute. Chelsea were subsequently awarded a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted in the 64th minute to make it 2-0.
Manchester United: Who Is to Blame?
Many Manchester United fans are tired of the poor performances and want answers. The big question is: who should take responsibility for the club's disappointing season?
Michael Carrick?
The players?
Or the owners?
Michael Carrick?
One might arguably say that Carrick coached a 3-0 win in the first half. After all, why should he be expected to teach professional footballers how to shoot the ball? However, the defence was a total disaster, and United did drop off in the second half, although we can partly attribute that to Lisandro Martinez's dismissal.Carrick certainly has questions to answer about the team's inability to maintain its first-half performance.
The Players?
As for the players, one might argue, most especially, about captain Bruno Fernandes, who has so far failed to consistently lead by example. While the players cannot be blamed for every problem at the club, their individual performances, poor finishing and defensive errors have contributed significantly to United's struggles.
The Owners?
As for the owners, having subpar players who seemingly aren't delivering the required performances for Manchester United raises serious questions about recruitment and the club's direction.I mean, United have been on a fast-moving train of decline since they took over the club, so, of course, it's understandable that fans want answers.Ultimately, the problems at Manchester United appear to go beyond one manager or one disappointing performance. So, who should take the blame for Manchester United's current situation: Michael Carrick, the players or the owners?
