Chapter 1: The Anniversary Betrayal

The first time my husband told me to leave his house, I was holding his anniversary gift.

It was a silver watch I had spent three months choosing. I had saved money from my small online business because I wanted to give Alexander something meaningful.

I never imagined that the gift I brought home that evening would become the last thing I would offer him as his wife.

“Alexander, what's going on?” I asked.

He stood beside the fireplace in his expensive black suit, looking at me as though I were a stranger who had wandered into his mansion.

Beside him stood a beautiful woman wearing a red dress.

Her name was Vanessa Cole.

She was the woman whose photographs had appeared beside my husband's name in business magazines for months.

I had always believed their relationship was strictly professional.

Apparently, I had been wrong.

“Amelia, we need to end this marriage,” Alexander said coldly.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“End what?”

“Our marriage.”

The silver gift box slipped slightly in my hands.

“But today is our third anniversary.”

“I know what day it is.”

“Then why is she here?”

Vanessa stepped forward and smiled.

“Because Alexander and I are getting married.”

I stared at her.

Then I looked at my husband, waiting for him to deny it.

He didn't.

Instead, he placed a document on the table.

“Sign the divorce papers. You can leave tonight, and I'll arrange a settlement.”

I looked down at the document.

Three years of marriage had been reduced to a few printed pages.

“Did you ever love me?” I whispered.

Alexander's expression remained unreadable.

“Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.”

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I had stood beside him when his company was struggling. I had stayed awake through countless nights while he worked toward building his empire. I had believed that behind his cold public image was a man who genuinely loved me.

Perhaps I had simply loved the person I imagined him to be.

I placed the gift box on the table.

“You know what, Alexander? Keep your money. Keep your mansion. Keep everything.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“You're refusing the settlement?”

“I never married you for your money.”

Vanessa laughed.

“That's easy to say when you've spent three years living like a queen.”

I turned toward her.

“You're right about one thing. I have lived in this house for three years. But you have no idea what those years have cost me.”

Alexander moved between us.

“Enough. Security will help you pack.”

I looked at him one final time.

“Don't worry. I'll leave without your security guards.”

I walked upstairs, packed a small suitcase, and returned to the entrance.

No one followed me.

No one asked me to stay.

When I stepped outside, the rain had begun to fall.

I stood beneath the entrance for a moment, looking back at the mansion where I had once imagined growing old with my husband.

Then I walked away.

My phone rang before I reached the gate.

It was my older brother, Daniel.

“Amelia? Where are you?”

“I'm leaving Alexander's house.”

There was a long silence.

“What did that man do to you?”

“He wants a divorce.”

Daniel's voice changed immediately.

“Listen to me carefully. Don't sign anything yet.”

“Why?”

“Because there's something about Alexander's company that you don't know.”

I wiped the rain from my face.

“What are you talking about?”

“Three years ago, when his company was on the verge of collapse, someone secretly invested a huge amount of money to save it.”

I stopped walking.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

My brother took a deep breath.

“Amelia, the investor was you.”

I stared at the phone.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“You used the inheritance Mother left you to help save his company. You asked me to keep your identity confidential because you wanted Alexander to love you without knowing how wealthy you were.”

My entire body went still.

I had never told Alexander about the investment.

I had wanted our marriage to be built on love, not money.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “does Alexander know?”

“Not yet. But there's something else.”

“What?”

“The company shares you own are worth more than half of his empire.”

I looked back at the mansion.

Through the enormous windows, I could see Alexander and Vanessa celebrating as though they had just won something.

They believed I was leaving with nothing.

They had no idea what I had left behind.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Amelia, don't go home yet. I need to show you something.”

“What is it?”

His answer made my heart stop.

“I found out why Alexander married you in the first place.”

The call ended.

I stood in the rain, staring at my dark phone screen.

For three years, I had believed I was the woman Alexander chose because he loved me.

Now I wasn't sure our marriage had ever been what I thought it was.

And for the first time since I met him, I wanted to know the truth more than I wanted his love.
