Regrets Missing a Final Phone Call, Leaving a Regret

"If I had thought of you last week and sent you a call or a message, we might have had one last chance to talk."

51-year-old Wu Wenxin bravely fought her breast cancer since its recurrence and spread in 2024, until her passing this morning.

【Reveals Plastic Surgery Process, Avant-garde Style】 She was the second runner-up in the 1998 Miss Hong Kong pageant, known for her outspoken and courageous image after being crowned. She was the first Miss Hong Kong to publicly disclose her plastic surgery process. She accepted an invitation from Stephen Shiu to be the spokesperson for his beauty company, receiving a million-dollar fee on the condition that she reveal her procedures. After agreeing, Wu Wenxin went to South Korea to undergo multiple surgeries, including rhinoplasty, liposuction on her buttocks and waist, collagen injections for lip augmentation, liposuction from her arms and thighs injected into her forehead, and freckle removal treatment. She also had Botox injections in her chin, brows, jawline, and corners of her eyes. Her avant-garde and daring style caused a sensation in the entertainment industry.

[Mocking Kathy Chow, Offending Wong Jing]

Her courage brought her attention; however, her frankness also led to a career slump. With her sweet looks and intelligence, she quickly gained popularity in the film industry within two years of entering the business, appearing in several films as a supporting actress, including *Moonlight in Happy Valley* and *35 Million Mind*. She also played a significant role as Cecilia Cheung's best friend in Wong Jing's 2001 film *The King of Comedy*.

In 2007, she appeared as a guest on the TVB game show "Problematic Entertainment Circle." During the "Entertainment Showdown" segment, the question was asked: "Who is older, model Kathy Chow or Lydia Shum?" Ng Man-yan chose "Kathy Chow," explaining that she was "bigger" because Kathy Chow was known for her exaggerated eyes and blatant lies. "It's not my fault," she said, "I only heard it from reporters in the newspapers recently." This directly contradicted rumors of Kathy Chow's plastic surgery.

[Speaking Out Pays a Heavy Price] She once again became the focus of attention, sparking an online debate about "who is prettier, Kathy Chow or Ng Man-yan, and who is the real beauty?" However, this time her outspokenness resulted in a heavy price: being blacklisted. At the time, Kathy Chow was a favorite of Wong Jing's company, so Ng Man-yan's remarks not only offended the woman but also angered Wong Jing. He rarely stood up for his protégé, issuing a "complete blacklist" against Ng Man-yan and her manager Siu Ding-yat's company, along with the board of directors. He publicly stated, "The board is furious and reserves the right to pursue legal action! At this stage, we will not use their artists in movies or for events!" Ng Man-yan was subsequently blacklisted for 13 years, finding it difficult to establish herself in the film industry, and her acting career stagnated.

Four years later, she married her sweetheart, starting a family with financial talent Chan Kin-ling, and faded from the entertainment industry. She didn't return until 2020, making a guest appearance in the ViuTV drama "Mature Woman Strong" as "Mrs. Cheng."

[Fellow winner, Anne Heung, sheds tears while looking at photos] Anne Heung, the winner of the same year as Ng Man-yan, and her close friend, shared their grief on social media after learning of the tragic news. It turns out that two days ago (June 6th) was the 28th anniversary of the 1998 Miss Hong Kong pageant. She said that after receiving news of Wu Wenxin's death, she was afraid to look at her phone. Her words conveyed sadness and regret.

She said, "Actually, I suddenly had a feeling these past few days that I hadn't received any messages from you. I felt a little uneasy. I kept thinking that after finishing my work in mainland China this week, I would go back to Hong Kong to meet you. I never expected to receive this sad news this morning 🥺🙏🏼."

"This morning I didn't dare look at my phone, afraid of seeing any messages related to you, afraid it would affect my work. Until work was finished, I finally calmed down and looked at the photos, and tears kept flowing..."

[A promise for a deep conversation falls through]

She recalled her past gatherings with Wu Wenxin, how she was always infected by Wu's positive energy, and how unforgettable Wu was always the most mischievous one at gatherings. She also remembered that Wu had invited her to write the preface for her book last year, regretting that their promise had now fallen through. "Asking me to write a preface for you allowed me to properly reflect on our shared moments and feelings. I remember after sending you the preface, you told me you 'took it to heart' 🥺 saying we'd never had a proper conversation. We promised to meet up and talk things out... but that meeting will have to wait a little longer 🙏🏼🙏🏼

"May you continue to live a carefree and joyful life in heaven, may your laughter echo throughout the land! Your smile will forever remain in our hearts 💖

"Cherish the people in front of you, live in the present—everyone says that. But whether I can truly do it, I'm still learning! Doing what I want to do also requires learning. If I had called or texted you last week when I thought of you, perhaps we could have had one last conversation... Now, all that's left is a small regret..."

"Looking at the photos again, reminiscing about our 28 years together, tears continued to flow, but I'll keep everything safe in my heart. 💌 Goodbye, our happy and strong Nat." Nat! 💖”

Furthermore, Selena Lee, who attended the event today, expressed her sadness over the passing of Ng Man-yan. “I knew her, but not well. Some of my friends were closer to her, so I sometimes heard about her battle with cancer. I thought she was very positive and full of energy, actively trying many methods to treat her illness. So, hearing about her passing today is very regrettable. I hope she is now in a more comfortable resting place, and I hope her family and friends can find solace in this difficult time.”
