OPINION

Has somebody ever said something that irked you, and made you really worked-up? Have they ever said things that you felt, from your perspective, were not well-thought over, and a little bit insensitive? Did you have this feeling that, in a way, however much the stuff that they had said might seem abstract, they were talking about you?

That is the irony of democracy: it allows everybody to open their mouth and pour out whatever they harbor in there – be it valuable for the well-being of the community or otherwise.

It is their right (also called freedom of expression). The same way, you too have your rights. And this applies as much to what we say as to how we feel about what other people have said.

What therefore does one do in case they feel that somebody has been callous in what they have said? Call the person. Talk it out. Give them your perspective. Listen to their side as well. This avoids unnecessary tension and a lot of suspicion.

For the emotionally strong individuals, the best thing to do is to ignore whatever the offending guy might have said. In case of a social media post, just delete it from your handles and – voila! It will be gone with the wind.
