Bai Jing was once a rising star in the entertainment industry, but perished in a marriage to a wealthy family: The truth behind Bai Jing's tragedy
On February 28, 2012, a peaceful midday in a community in Wangjing, Beijing, was shattered by a sudden tragedy.
29-year-old actress Bai Jing was preparing to leave when her husband, Zhou Chenghai, suddenly appeared. Their marriage had long been on the verge of collapse, and they had a heated argument the previous night. Unexpectedly, this argument became the final straw.
According to Bai Jing's family, Zhou Chenghai lost control and charged at Bai Jing with a knife. Hearing the commotion, her family tried to stop him, but were terrified by the scene and could only flee while calling for help. When she returned, Bai Jing was lying in a pool of blood, and Zhou Chenghai had taken his own life.
A young actress in the prime of her life ended just like that.
What's even more heartbreaking is that after Bai Jing's death, the outside world did not offer her full sympathy. As rumors of infidelity, fraud, and disputes over family property surfaced, she was even labeled with harsh terms by some netizens. This marital tragedy continues to be a topic of discussion.
Bai Jing was born in 1983 into an ordinary working-class family in Liaoning Province. She was well-behaved and sensible from a young age, and also possessed a natural talent for dance. Her family was not well-off; her father was reluctant to spend extra money on her artistic development, but her mother gritted her teeth and scrimped and saved to send her to dance classes.
Later, her parents divorced, and Bai Jing moved to Beijing with her mother. Life was difficult for them; they lived in a cramped basement, and her mother supported the family by working as a cleaner. Bai Jing witnessed this and understood the importance of sharing the burden early on, attending classes during the day and performing at night to earn money.
She wasn't trapped by poverty; instead, she worked even harder on her artistic path. In 2002, Bai Jing was admitted to the Central Academy of Drama, becoming classmates with Wen Zhang, Bai Baihe, Tang Yan, and others. For her, this should have been the beginning of a turning point in her life.
In 2005, Bai Jing entered the film and television industry with her role in the TV series "Emotion." It was at a party that she met the man who would change her life—Zhou Chenghai.
Zhou Chenghai was much older than her and reportedly worked in the stock and bond industry, possessing considerable wealth. Upon first seeing Bai Jing, he was immediately attracted to this young, beautiful, and refreshingly elegant girl. Their first meal together wasn't at a fancy restaurant, but at a roadside stall selling spicy hot pot. It's said that Bai Jing treated him with her meager savings, which made Zhou Chenghai think she was simple and genuine.
Afterwards, Zhou Chenghai began pursuing her ardently. Luxury cars, houses, living expenses, investment in plays—he was willing to provide almost anything Bai Jing needed. It's said he funded Bai Jing's playwriting and promised to give her a monthly allowance after marriage and to take care of her mother.
Under Zhou Chenghai's intense pursuit, Bai Jing agreed to date him. However, Bai's mother later stated that Zhou Chenghai initially concealed the fact that he was already married and didn't clearly state his true age. Bai Jing only later learned that Zhou Chenghai was not only 18 years older than her, but also had been married before and had children.
Bai Jing was initially unable to accept this and even suggested breaking up. However, Zhou Chenghai stated that he was willing to divorce his wife despite his family's objections, just to be with her. In March 2008, the two registered their marriage.
After marriage, Bai Jing's acting career was initially very successful. She gained recognition for her role in "Blood-Stained Xiangxi," and later starred in "Kung Fu Wing Chun." She also became a student of Ip Man's son, Ip Chun, and was seen by many as a potential new generation of action star. Young, beautiful, and with a dance background, she received increasing opportunities, and her future seemed bright.
In October 2010, Bai Jing and Zhou Chenghai held a wedding ceremony. To outsiders, it was a dignified and luxurious wedding; the couple was sweet and loving, and many guests attended. However, it was around the time of this wedding that a man named Qiao Yu entered their lives.
Qiao Yu was a friend Zhou Chenghai met at the gym. His background was shrouded in mystery; he often claimed to have connections and influence, able to handle anything. Zhou Chenghai was known for his generosity, earning him the nickname "Boss Zhou" at the gym, and he frequently paid for meals and gatherings. Qiao Yu, recognizing this, deliberately approached him, and the two quickly became acquainted.
Soon after, Zhou Chenghai encountered some trouble: his car was vandalized with paint, and he received threatening phone calls. Qiao Yu offered to help resolve these issues, but said it would require bribing officials. Zhou Chenghai believed him and gave him money, luxury watches, and paintings. Later, things seemed to calm down, and Zhou Chenghai trusted Qiao Yu even more, even inviting him on a trip to Hong Kong with Bai Jing, spending millions of yuan.
However, court documents later revealed that these so-called "troubles" were actually a scam orchestrated by Qiao Yu himself. The alleged threats were also staged by someone he hired.
Further complicating matters, the relationship between Bai Jing and Qiao Yu began to be questioned by outsiders. Gym attendees reported that the two interacted intimately, often flirting. Zhou Chenghai, however, chose to believe them, even allowing Qiao Yu free access to his home and being very generous to him.
Around 2011, Zhou Chenghai's finances began to decline. At this time, Qiao Yu proposed a so-called large-scale investment project, claiming astonishing returns. Zhou Chenghai believed him again, selling his stocks to cash out and investing large sums of money and vehicles.
However, six months passed, and the project made no progress. Zhou Chenghai began to question Qiao Yu, but Qiao Yu repeatedly made excuses, eventually refusing to return the money. On a friend's advice, Zhou Chenghai reported the matter to the police. According to reports, during the police investigation, Zhou Chenghai discovered that Qiao Yu and Bai Jing were staying at the same hotel, a devastating blow to him.
Afterwards, the situation deteriorated rapidly.
After Qiao Yu was detained, he reportedly continued to try to influence Bai Jing, encouraging her to divorce him and fight for assets. Bai Jing subsequently filed for divorce from Zhou Chenghai. At the time, Zhou Chenghai was in the hospital caring for his seriously ill mother when Bai Jing confronted him in the ward. She not only demanded a division of assets but also stated she would testify on Qiao Yu's behalf, claiming the money wasn't from fraud but rather a loan she herself had given to him.
These words deeply affected Zhou's mother, who passed away shortly afterward. Her death became the final straw for Zhou Chenghai.
Faced with financial losses, a broken marriage, and the loss of his mother, he gradually collapsed. The day before the incident, he received a court summons, formally facing divorce proceedings. The next day, tragedy struck.
After Bai Jing's death, public opinion exploded. Some alleged she had an extramarital affair, while Bai's mother insisted her daughter was innocent and even sued the whistleblower for emotional distress. However, the court ultimately ruled that the whistleblower did not constitute an infringement and dismissed Bai's mother's claim.
Meanwhile, intimate photos of Bai Jing and Qiao Yu circulated online, causing a rapid shift in public opinion towards her. Some sympathized with her untimely death, while others directed all their anger at her, even attacking her with extremely harsh words.
In 2015, the court found Qiao Yu guilty of defrauding Zhou Chenghai of 2.36 million yuan and sentenced her to 11 years in prison. Qiao Yu appealed, denying the fraud and denying that she had ever claimed to have a special background. Until 2016, the Beijing High Court determined that the recording provided by Zhou Chenghai's brother was indeed Qiao Yu's voice, and showed no signs of editing or coercion, thus establishing a solid chain of evidence. The appeal was dismissed, and the original verdict was upheld.
Looking back at this tragedy, no one truly won.
Zhou Chenghai abandoned his family for love, ultimately suffering financial loss, the death of his mother, and his own tragic end. Bai Jing had a promising acting career, but died at the young age of 29, and has endured years of public criticism since her death. The pain of her mother burying her child is unbearable for the rest of her life.
In a relationship, the most dangerous thing is not a lack of love, but a lack of honesty, clarity, and adherence to boundaries. Whether a celebrity or an ordinary person, emotions can be passionate, but one must be clear-headed in their conduct. Love must be open and honest for a lasting relationship; one must respect oneself to avoid pushing oneself into an abyss of no return.
