According to Japanese media reports on Sunday, the April the 26th, data from the Japanese National Police Agency shows that nearly seventy seven thousand people living alone died at home in Japan in 2025. Of these (seventy seven thousand people), over twenty two thousand (two-seventh of the seventy seven thousand people) their own corpse was being found by people or corpse being discovered more than eight days after their deaths, classified as "lonely deaths."

With the aging population, the Japanese government implemented the "Law for the Promotion of Measures Against Loneliness and Isolation" in April 2024, beginning annual statistics on deaths of people living alone at home.

By definition, death without anyone accompanying or death without any companionship and the corpse being discover for more than eight days after the day of the death is being considered a "lonely death," which is a situation that usually presumes that the deceased was in a state of social isolation before death.

The Data from the Japanese National Police Agency shows that seventy six thousand and nine hundred and forty one  people living alone died at home in Japan in 2025, with nearly thirty percent (twenty two thousand two hundred and twenty two people (22,222 people) were deceased  when alone, showing an increase from the previous year.

In terms of age, those aged sixty five years old or older (and over 65) accounted for about seventy percent of the "lonely deaths" group; in terms of gender, men accounted for about eighty percent.

 

Data shows that in about seventy percent of "lonely deaths," the victims were discovered within one month of death, while two hundred and eight people were being discovered for more than a year after their deaths, highlighting the long-term social isolation of certain groups.

The Japanese Cabinet Office analysis indicates that as the number of people living alone continues to increase, the group facing the risk of loneliness and social isolation in Japan may further increase, and the Japanese government is discussing countermeasures.
