Hula Hooping After Meal Causes 28-Year-Old Woman in Zhejiang to Suffer 3 Hours of Spleen Rupture After Internal Organs "Crushed"

-----

A 28-year-old woman in Zhejiang recently suffered a ruptured spleen and over 1,000 ml of blood in her abdominal cavity after using a heavy-duty hula hoop after a meal. She required emergency spleen removal to save her life. The surgeon described her spleen as "crushed into pieces." The emergency department of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University revealed that they have recently admitted three patients with internal organ ruptures caused by hula hooping.

Severe Pain Lasts Two to Three Hours Before Hospitalization According to the *Metropolis Daily* and the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, around 6 pm on the evening of the incident, 28-year-old Wang Tong (pseudonym) began exercising with a heavy-duty hula hoop she had purchased online about half an hour after finishing dinner. Shortly after, she felt severe pain in her upper left abdomen. Initially, she thought it was muscle soreness or indigestion. After enduring the pain at home for two or three hours, it intensified, and she began to feel dizzy. Her family then called an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

The ambulance arrived at the emergency room of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine at around 1:00 AM the following day. Wang Tong was pale, her lips were purple, and her blood pressure was only 80/50 mmHg, indicating early-stage hemorrhagic shock. An ultrasound revealed a large amount of blood in her abdominal cavity, and her condition was critical.

This case of spleen rupture caused by hula hooping after a meal is not an isolated incident. Dr. Wang Shuai, deputy director and chief physician of the hospital's emergency surgery department, opened the abdominal cavity and found that the patient's spleen was completely ruptured, resembling broken pieces of blood tofu, with continuous active bleeding at the rupture site. The surgical team had to remove the spleen to stop the bleeding and save her life. Wang Tong's condition stabilized after the surgery, and she has now recovered and been discharged from the hospital.

Wang Shuai explained that the spleen is the most fragile solid organ in the abdominal cavity, filled with blood vessels and with a texture like "soft tofu." Located in the upper left abdomen, it is extremely prone to rupture from external impact. Half an hour after the woman ate, her stomach was full, abdominal tension increased, and her spleen was congested, resulting in a slight increase in size. At this time, rotating a heavy hula hoop repeatedly impacted the junction of the costal arch and abdomen in the upper left abdomen, directly transmitting the force to the spleen and causing it to rupture.

Hospital Receives Three Similar Cases, Urges Caution with "Heavier" Versions

The emergency department of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University revealed that this woman's case was not isolated; recently, they have admitted three female patients whose spleens ruptured due to hula hooping. The severity of the injuries varied, but all three involved spleen damage and active bleeding. Even more worryingly, some of them, before being taken to the emergency room, told their families that they "just had a slight stomachache, probably from food poisoning."

Doctors advise that if you still wish to use a hula hoop, you should follow these guidelines:

Choose a lightweight hula hoop weighing less than 1 kg, avoiding "heavyweight" models;

Do not hula-hoop for more than 15 minutes at a time to avoid muscle fatigue and posture distortion;

Wait at least two hours after a meal before hula-hooping to allow your stomach to empty and abdominal pressure to decrease;

Lower the hula hoop position during exercise to reduce impact on the spleen area.

Doctors specifically warn that if you experience persistent, severe pain in the upper left abdomen after exercise, accompanied by cold sweats, dizziness, weakness, or even unexplained soreness in the left shoulder, it is highly likely that you are experiencing internal bleeding. You must seek immediate medical attention and not try to treat it as a muscle strain at home, as this could delay treatment.
