The appointment was announced in a statement on Thursday by the Presidency. According to the statement, Yakubu's experience in managing elections and governance will help strengthen Nigeria's diplomatic relations with Morocco and other North African countries.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu served as INEC Chairman for 10 years, from 2015 to 2025, conducting two general elections in 2019 and 2023. His tenure was praised by some and criticized by others, especially over the use of BVAS and IReV technology during elections.
The appointment has generated mixed reactions on social media. Supporters of the government say it is a well-deserved honour for a man who served Nigeria meritoriously. They said Yakubu managed difficult elections in a complex country like Nigeria.
Opposition supporters, particularly from the Labour Party and PDP, however, criticized the appointment, saying Yakubu did not conduct credible elections in 2023 and should not be rewarded. They argued that INEC under him disappointed many Nigerians.
The Senate is expected to screen and confirm Yakubu's ambassadorial appointment next week.
Professor Yakubu is from Bauchi State and is a former Executive Secretary of TETFUND. He has promised to serve Nigeria diligently in his new role.
Do you think ex-INEC Chairmen should be given political appointments immediately after leaving office?
