According to reports, bandits riding on motorcycles attacked several villages in Kebbi South on Wednesday, burning houses and shooting villagers. Over 30 people were reportedly killed and many were kidnapped.
The US Embassy in Abuja released a security alert advising its citizens to avoid traveling to rural areas in Kebbi and other North West states due to heightened risk of bandit attacks. The alert said armed groups are operating freely and security forces are overstretched.
The Nigerian Army said it has deployed more soldiers to Kebbi to restore peace and is carrying out operations to rescue kidnapped victims. The Kebbi State Government has also promised to support security agencies and provide relief to affected families.
Kebbi is one of the states badly affected by banditry in the North West, along with Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and Katsina. In the last year, hundreds of people have been killed in the region despite military operations.
Many Nigerians are worried that insecurity may affect the 2027 elections if not addressed quickly. Security is expected to be a major campaign issue in 2027.
