Imagine a place where 2 AM looks like 2 PM. The sun is still shining bright, birds are chirping, and children are playing outside at midnight. No darkness, no moon, no stars for months. Sounds like fiction, right? But this place is 100% real.

Welcome to the Land of the Midnight Sun.

This is not one country, but several countries located near the North Pole and South Pole where the sun refuses to set for up to 6 months.

WHICH COUNTRIES HAVE NO NIGHT?

1. Norway: Called the official Land of the Midnight Sun. In Svalbard, Norway, the sun shines continuously from April 20th to August 22nd. In Hammerfest, one of the northernmost towns, you can experience the midnight sun from May to July.

2. Iceland: In the town of Akureyri and Grimsey Island, the sun never fully sets from June to July. You can read a book outside at midnight without any light.

3. Sweden and Finland: In the northern parts like Abisko in Sweden and Utsjoki in Finland, the sun stays up for over 70 days straight in summer.

4. Alaska, USA: In the city of Barrow (now called Utqiagvik), the sun does not set from May 10th to August 2nd. That is 83 days of no night.

5. Antarctica: At the South Pole research stations, scientists experience 6 months of continuous daylight during the southern summer.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN? THE SCIENCE EXPLAINED.

The reason is simple geography. The Earth is tilted on its axis at 23.5 degrees. It does not spin straight up like a ball, it spins tilted.

During summer in the Northern Hemisphere (June to September), the North Pole is tilted towards the sun. Because of this tilt, areas inside the Arctic Circle (66.5 degrees North latitude) are always facing the sun as the Earth rotates. Even when it is supposed to be night, the sun is still above the horizon.

Think of it like this: If you tilt a ball towards a torchlight, one part of the ball will always see the light, no matter how much you spin it.

The opposite happens in winter. These same places will have 6 months of total darkness called Polar Night. In winter, the sun will not rise at all.

HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE WITHOUT NIGHT?

This is the most interesting part. Living without night is not easy.

1. Blackout Curtains: Every house, hotel, and apartment in these regions has thick, 100% blackout curtains. Without it, you cannot sleep.

2. Body Clock Confusion: Many newcomers suffer from insomnia. Your brain uses darkness to produce melatonin (the sleep hormone). When there is no darkness, your body gets confused and you feel awake all the time.

3. Midnight Activities: Locals have adapted. They play golf at midnight, go fishing at 2 AM, have festivals at night. In Norway, they celebrate the Midnight Sun Marathon where people run at midnight under the bright sun.

4. Vitamin D Overload, But Happy Mood: People get a lot of Vitamin D, but doctors also report higher rates of happiness and energy in summer and depression in the dark winter.

CAN NIGERIANS VISIT THIS PLACE?

Yes. The best and cheapest place to experience it is Norway or Iceland. If you visit Norway between June 15th and July 15th, you are guaranteed to see the midnight sun. You don't need any special permit, just a Schengen visa.

Seeing the sun at midnight is on many people's bucket list. It reminds us how amazing and diverse our planet Earth is. While we in Nigeria complain about too much sun, some people in the world are praying for just one hour of darkness.

Would you be able to sleep if the sun never sets?
