Akume said this on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja. According to him, there is an unwritten agreement on power rotation between the North and South since 1999, and it is only fair to respect it.

He explained that former President Muhammadu Buhari, who is from the North, completed 8 years from 2015 to 2023, so President Bola Tinubu from the South should also be allowed to complete his 8 years till 2031.

Akume said those Northern politicians like Atiku Abubakar and others who are already declaring interest for 2027 are trying to break the unity of Nigeria. He urged them to wait till 2031 when power will return to the North.

The statement has sparked reactions from different parts of the country. Northern groups like the Arewa Consultative Forum said there is nothing like power rotation in the constitution and anybody from any region can contest. They said the North has the votes to win.

Southern groups, however, supported Akume, saying the South must complete its turn for fairness and justice.

This debate about power rotation happens in every election in Nigeria. With Atiku, Peter Obi and others already positioning for 2027, will Nigerians vote based on region or based on competence?
