Hollywood is set to honor one of its last true movie superstars. The American Film Institute has announced that Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film.
The AFI announced the news today, calling Cruise "one of the most iconic and committed actors in cinematic history." The award celebrates his nearly 45-year career that has defined Hollywood blockbusters.
From his breakout role in Risky Business in 1983, to Top Gun in 1986, to Jerry Maguire, to the Mission: Impossible franchise that is still breaking box office records in 2025, Cruise has done it all. He is famous for doing all his own stunts, including hanging from planes, climbing the Burj Khalifa, and jumping off cliffs on a motorcycle.
At 63, Cruise is still at the top of his game. His last film, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, grossed over $600 million worldwide.
Previous winners of the AFI Life Achievement Award include Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Julie Andrews, and George Clooney. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles in 2026 and will feature tributes from Steven Spielberg, who directed Cruise in Minority Report and War of the Worlds.
Fans on social media are already celebrating, saying the award is long overdue for an actor who has literally saved the movie theater experience multiple times.
Tom Cruise is expected to attend the gala with his children and close friends.
