Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Children: Silent but Serious
Chronic kidney disease in children is often caused by birth defects, genetic disorders, or early kidney injuries, and while it may start quietly, its risks are lifelong. Beyond the threat of kidney failure, CKD disrupts growth, weakens bones, causes anemia, raises infection risk, and silently damages the heart and blood vessels—making cardiovascular disease the leading long-term danger. It also affects school performance, mental health, and overall quality of life. Early detection, blood pressure control, proper nutrition, and timely specialist care can slow progression and transform outcomes. Yet, in many parts of the world, late diagnosis and limited access to care worsen the burden. Protecting children from CKD means acting early, treating comprehensively, and ensuring every child has access to the care and support needed to grow, thrive, and live fully.
