Climate change impacts and possible mitigation actions

Various stakeholder including the Amathole District Municipality, Department of Forestr, Fisheries and the Environment, Department of Economics Development, Environmental affairs and tourism and others gathared in Raymond Mhlaba municipality to discuss the pressing issue of climate change. Climate change is real and its far reaching impacts are being felt worldwide, from water scarcity and human health threats to food insecurity.

The environment is suffering , with rising temperatures causing rapid water evaporation, soil dehydration, and vegetation dryness. Moreover, increased temperatures can lead to heat related illnesses, such as heat stroke, exhaustion, and headaches, ultimately affectin livestock production due to heat stress.

To combat these challengs, several mitigation strategies were discussed. Reforestation and restoring of wetlands are some actions that can help mitigate climate change. Additionally, energy efficiency plays a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emission through measures like emplementing efficient appliances.

These efforts align with the global push for climate change mitigation, which involve reducing greenhouse gas emission and limiting global warming to 1.5% above pre industrial levels.
