FIRST AID AND CAUSALITY HANDLING

First aid is the immediate care given to an injured person or someone that suddenly falls ill, before the arrival of medical personnel, first aid is mostly rendered in an emergency situation. It involves careful application of accepted principles of treatment using facilities available to the firs aid (first responder)

Aims of first Aid

i.       To prevent the victim’s life

ii.     To prevent the condition from worsening

iii.    To promote recovery

iv.    To comfort and relieve pains from victims

Qualities of a First Aider

  1. Every road roads user is expected to have basic knowledge of first aid.
  2. First aider must have knowledge of use of items in the first aid kit and be able to improvise when necessary (getting clean materials from the immediate environment to replace those needed e.g. part of clothing for bandages, light woods for splints).
  3. First aider's safety must be ensured before administration of first aid.
  4. Evacuate the victims to the hospital or health centre.
  5. Make use of assistant of by-stander when lifting and transporting victims, if the situation warrants.
