I Slept with my Best Friend's Brother: Chapter 9

Bailey kicked off her heels, ruffled her long curled inky locks, and walked over to Kaleb's bed. She didn't turn on the light — it would only make her throbbing headache worse. Moonlight gave just enough glow to see by.

She sat on the bed, then thought about all the girls who'd been here before her. Grossed out, she almost left — but it was the only quiet spot in the whole house. She promised herself she'd shower first thing tomorrow morning, curled up under his covers, and closed her eyes. It was still noisy downstairs, but up here it was peaceful.

She didn't know how long she'd rested when the door suddenly opened and someone stumbled in. Her eyes flew open — she'd forgotten to lock it! She went perfectly still, praying they'd just leave. Then she heard the lock click, and her heart sank. She held her breath, ready to bolt —

Bang.

"Fuck!" Kaleb hissed as he tripped and hit the floor hard. "Who the hell left these damn heels here?!" He threw them aside, and Bailey heard them clatter against the wall.

She glared into the dark — did he just fling her shoes?! Still, she breathed a sigh of relief. It was just Kaleb, not some stranger. She stayed quiet. He sounded drunk, stumbling around. Maybe if she stayed still, he wouldn't notice her. They always argued — she didn't have the energy for it right now.

But then he started walking toward the bed. She froze, heart pounding. Please just grab whatever you want and leave. Please don't come closer —

Suddenly his full weight dropped right on top of her. Bailey gasped.

"What the hell?" Kaleb mumbled, confused and heavy. He rolled off but one leg stayed pressed between hers. "Who is that?" he slurred, his warm breath brushing her cheek. Bailey could barely breathe.

Minutes earlier:

Kaleb poured himself another drink. Not beer this time — something stronger. He was still angry. He'd stepped in and protected her, and she'd just walked away like he was the problem. It made his blood boil.

Kaleb's jaw tightened. He hated seeing her dance with that guy, and he couldn't explain the sudden, fierce rage that flared up when he saw those hands on her waist. All he knew was he wanted to tear them off. He poured himself another drink and downed it all in one go.

"Easy there," Ryan said, patting his back. Stefan laughed and held out two gummy bears. "Here — these'll make you feel way better."

"Gummy bears? Really?" Kaleb grumbled.

"They're edibles," Stefan whispered. "They'll chill you right out."

Kaleb hesitated — he was already furious and confused about why he even cared so much. He took them anyway, desperate to stop feeling this way. Ryan looked worried — mixing liquor with edibles was a bad idea — but Kaleb ate them without listening.

It didn't take long. Everything started shifting. Every face on the dance floor turned into Bailey's. Everywhere he looked, it was her. He rubbed his eyes, but she wouldn't go away. When Ryan spoke, he turned and saw Bailey instead. He was losing it.

"I'm going upstairs," he mumbled, stumbling off before anyone could stop him. He made it to his room, locked the door behind him — finally safe. Why couldn't he stop thinking about her?

He tripped over something on the floor. "Dammit! Who left these heels here?!" He kicked them aside, vision swimming. This was supposed to be his party. He was supposed to be having fun. Instead he felt terrible. He flopped onto his bed — and froze. There was someone already lying there. He heard a soft gasp beneath him.

And oh, God — whoever she was, she felt perfect under him.
