I didn't know I was allergic to bee stings until I was bit by one in the leg a few years ago. I had always been the one left while people scurried for cover at the sight of bees. I thought they were harmless cute little things and only bit on provocation.
So when I got bit I was shocked because I was just seated in my house, I didn't even see it coming! With my leg all swollen I made my way to the clinic which fortunately was just some metres away. I was given a shot and the following day I was fine save for just a little pain but the swelling had gone down.
A week later I was bitten by another bee!! This time in the other leg. I again trekked to the clinic. The doctor couldn't believe it but there was no denying the evidence. I was scratching my head, 'what is happening to me?'
The third week I was sleeping when I was bitten by a spider on the neck, vampire style!!! Now I was convinced someone was out to kill me.🤣 I remember that when I walked into the clinic with my swollen neck with two very red dots on my neck the doctor just sat there staring at me, mouth agape.🤣
After my shot I went home, stress and sadness adding to my pain and befuddled mind. I got into bed and slept. I was awoken by the sound of my neighbor's two almost teenage daughters getting into my room. They usually came into the room to experiment with my makeup and play with my jewelry so I didn't even get up as I was used to it. On walking in they saw me under the covers and one of them stated, ' oh Gaone is asleep'
They proceeded to my dressing table and immediately the younger one said, ' oh Gaone has this lotion?'. She then went on to tell her sister that on a recent visit to their older sister, she found the same brand of lotion there and after applying it she was chased by bees the whole day!
As you can imagine, that was my 'aha!' moment. The relief I felt! I mean now I knew no one wanted to kill me! After they left I practically flew out of bed, did a little dance then threw the lotion out. I was healed..... By information. By two little girls who didn't know what I was going through, didn't know about my confusion and stress but by just talking in my presence they inadvertently solved a riddle and in so doing maybe even saved my life.
Sometimes that is all it takes. Your own or someone else's experience is almost always the best teacher.
Information does save lives.
