The Flag Brought Us Together
I love to walk, so you’ll often find me walking the neighborhood streets enjoying the beautiful day and the beauty that surrounds me. My son-in-law was in the military and I gained a whole new respect for military life. My daughter taught me to thank the military officers for their service. One day while out walking I noticed a flag in one of my neighbors yard. I stopped and asked him if he was a veteran. He said he was and I thanked him for his service.
I decided to bake some cookies to take him and a card to invite him to church. He was happy to receive them and one Sunday morning Mr Campbell came to visit my church.
We then would talk when I would see him out in the yard when I walked. He had a lot of beautiful flowers that I admired along with a lush looking fig tree, and abundant sweet potatoes vines. I would frequently stop and talk and he would share with me his flowers or vegetables. One day we made arrangements for him to get some plants together to share with me. I would pick them up later. He would set them just inside his fence. I was happy when I returned to find a handwritten note he had written on the seed packet he stuck with the plants.
That personal touch meant so much. I planted those seeds and the vines grew abundantly. One of them had beautiful white flowers that I enjoyed, all because he cared to share. We continue to see each other from time to time and share our flower stories. I have a habit of waving when walking by his house, just in case he is looking out his window. He will know I was thinking about him when I walk by. I appreciate his friendly, neighborly attitude and spirit. It’s very heartwarming. He is always happy to see me and I’m happy to see him, it’s a win-win situation that I walk away from feeling great.
