So let me ask you a random question: Do you like lists? Making to-do lists, thinking about what your top 10 best songs of all times looks like or writing down things you have do for today; things like that.
Now, whether you have already answered this or not, I want you to take an honest minute and find your answer. It might not be obvious right now, but when you think about it, you realize that most of the times you simply like making lists; Right? Its not about doing them really; that's another subject. But the fact that you sit down, write and think of or imagine lists in your head, somehow makes you feels better. Cohen puts our love of to-do lists down to three reasons: they dampen anxiety about the chaos of life; they give us a structure, a plan that we can stick to; and they are proof of what we have achieved that day, week or month.
And if I ever wanted to make a list of songs that'll help me push through these scorching days as we slowly roll to our inevitable doom, I'd put this track of Mr.Waits, all the way on top of it.
