What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednseday is the first day of Lenten season in the the Catholic church and other Western Christian denominations.Lent is a 40day period before Easter Sunday.
The day is observed by prayer, fasting and application of ashes to their foreheads in the sign of the cross which symbolise penance and reconcilliation with God.
Biblically its symbolic to the separation of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray.Matthew 4:1–11, Mark 1:12–13, and Luke 4:1–13.
Apart from Catholics, certain protestants like Lutherans, PCUSA Presbyterians, Anglicans, some reformed churches, some Baptists, Methodists,Evangelical Covenant Church, and some Mennonites also observe the ash wednesday.
