The tongue joins to the floor of the mouth with a snare of tissue called the lingual frenulum. Silence, or ankyloglossia, is a natural variety in this construction.
The lingual frenulum might be abbreviated or thickened, limiting development of the tongue, or it might tie the tongue excessively near the tip.
