I was scrolling through TikTok one evening when I stumbled across a video of a woman talking about a movie called Straw. She spoke about how emotionally powerful it was and encouraged viewers to watch it too.
At first, I ignored it. But then, video after video — “Straw this, Straw that” — kept popping up on my feed. Eventually, I gave in, downloaded the movie, and watched it.
And let me tell you: what a masterpiece.
The story felt so real. So personal. I was raised by a single mom, and I could see bits and pieces of my life reflected in every scene. Every line, every moment of silence, and every twist felt like it was written for people like us — those who have lived through it.
Taraji P. Henson delivered a phenomenal performance. (She carried that role like it was made for her!) Every cast member embodied their character in a way that made the story even more powerful. The plot was strong, the suspense was gripping, and the setting complemented the emotional weight of the film perfectly.
Now, I’ve seen people online say they didn’t cry or that it wasn’t that emotional — that the movie was overhyped. But I truly believe that unless you’ve lived through similar struggles, you may not fully grasp what the film was trying to communicate. And that’s okay. Everyone connects with stories differently. That’s the beauty of film and entertainment.
But for me — and many others — Straw wasn’t just a movie. It was an experience. It made me cry, laugh, reflect, and appreciate the strength of the women who raise children alone in a world that rarely makes space for them.
So, would I recommend it? Absolutely — especially if you enjoy stories that are grounded, emotional, and deeply relatable. But if you’re looking for something fast-paced or flashy, then Straw might not be your cup of tea.
If you do watch it, please come back and drop your own review — I’d love to know what you felt. And if you’ve already seen it, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
